Short-Term Program Scholarship Recipient: Amari Roberts
Amari Roberts from New Jersey is preparing to embark on a study abroad adventure in Jamaica. As the first recipient of the Joy Worldwide Inc. short-term program scholarship, her journey marks a significant milestone. Learn more about her story and what this opportunity means to her.
Why would you like to study abroad?
“Studying abroad in Jamaica feels like a dream, yet it’s one I’m determined to make real. As a psychology major and fine arts minor, with deep roots in mental health advocacy, ceramics, and herbalism, I know this experience would be transformative for me. Jamaica’s rich culture and deep connection to the land resonate with my passions and my African heritage, and I want to immerse myself fully in that environment. I believe this journey could help me understand myself and my place in the world in ways that wouldn’t be possible at home. I want to study literature because I see it as a way to bridge cultures and connect across generations. As an African American student, the chance to explore Jamaican stories firsthand and trace connections to my own roots is incredibly meaningful. Achieving this feels nearly impossible given my background, but I am driven to go after what feels out of reach. This experience would be more than just academic for me; it would be a step toward showing others like me that they, too, can pursue what seem impossible.”
What does being selected mean to you?
“Being selected for the study abroad scholarship means more to me than the financial assistance; it’s a reflection of the belief others have in my dreams and potential. I am incredibly grateful for the support and encouragement from my community and the opportunities they’ve created for someone like me, striving to achieve her educational goals. This scholarship symbolizes the faith that others have placed in me and serves as a reminder of how vital it is to have networks and resources that uplift and empower.”
What do you see yourself doing in 5-10 years?
“In the next 5 to 10 years, I see myself as a well-traveled individual who has explored numerous countries, gaining diverse experiences and cultural insights. My journey will include not only travel but also teaching, whether as a professor of psychology or an art teacher, sharing knowledge and fostering growth in various communities. I aim to use these experiences to connect with people from different walks of life, creating meaningful impacts in education and personal development worldwide.”
“Additionally, I see myself using my expertise to advocate for the mental health of African Americans. My goal is to break stigmas, foster open conversations, and create accessible resources that address the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities. By blending education, advocacy, and a passion for mental health, I plan to inspire positive change and empower individuals to prioritize their well-being.”
