Our Principles

“Study abroad not only opened my eyes to cultural nuance, but also pushed me to adopt an open mind to different perspectives. I never felt more uncomfortable relearning ‘basic’ things— but that discomfort became the building blocks to independence.”

FAQs

  • International education expands our minds to see the world from a new lens, challenges us to reimagine our lives and experiences, and allows us to celebrate and embrace different cultures. This enthralling experience forever changes us and puts us on a trajectory for continued learning and cross-cultural connection.

We recognize the transformative benefits of international education and aim to widen access to it across the African American community.

  • There is a large gap between races traveling abroad and having international experiences. During the 2018-2019 academic year, Black students studied abroad at their highest rate to date at 6.4%. However, White students make up 68.7% of study abroad students. These experiences are critical to a community that is disenfranchised due to systemic racism in the United States.

We aim to bridge the gap and create a pathway of self-discovery, cross-cultural connection, and impactful change through providing financial assistance for international education to African American students.

  • The target audience for the scholarship program is African American college students that are motivated to further their education through study abroad opportunities. We are seeking students with: open minds, volunteer experience, interest in community engagement, growth–mindsets, and strong goals.

  • Applications are open to students on a rolling basis. Applications are completed on a form.
