Juneteenth and Study Abroad: Freedom Through Education

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It holds significant historical and cultural importance as it marks when the last enslaved individuals in Texas were finally informed of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Access to information about the world is closely intertwined with freedom as knowledge empowers individuals to make informed choices, exercise their rights, and advocate for their beliefs. Knowledge provides individuals the information necessary to understand the world around them, question authority, and challenge oppressive systems.

Today, the African American community still faces oppression and barriers to equal opportunities. African American students can gain further personal freedom by expanding their horizons, exploring new ideas, and engaging in meaningful dialogue with others. Studying abroad is an excellent opportunity that empowers students to exercise their freedom, challenge injustice, and work towards a more equitable and inclusive world.
