Student Spotlight: Amari Roberts in Jamaica
What were the biggest personal challenges you faced during your time abroad, and how did you overcome them?
“My biggest challenge during my time abroad was my battle with control. I realized that I often try to maintain a firm grip on my life, planning and organizing everything to the last detail. For this trip, I consciously decided to let go and fully immerse myself in the experience, which was exciting but also unsettling. Letting go of control made me confront a version of myself I wasn’t entirely familiar with. With guidance from my mentor, who led the trip, I began to reflect on who I am, who I want to be, and the barriers I’ve built for myself. I overcame this challenge through open communication—both with my mentor and with myself. Those conversations helped me find clarity and allowed me to grow in ways I hadn’t expected.”
What similarities and differences have you experienced between your host culture and your culture?
“The most striking difference between my host culture and American culture was the sheer vibrancy and richness of life. In my host culture, there was color everywhere. Both literally and figuratively. The environment, the hospitality, and the community felt alive in ways that I don’t always experience at home. The food was fresher, the air seemed to heal you, and everything from nature to the people radiated positive energy. In contrast, I find that America often feels dull, lacking that same sense of brightness and richness. On the other hand, a similarity I noticed was a shared emphasis on connection. Whether through family, community, or conversation. It was heartening to see that, despite the differences, the core values of togetherness and care were universal.”
How has your confidence or independence grown as a result of this experience? What skills did you develop while abroad that you think will benefit you in your future endeavors?
“My time abroad deeply strengthened my confidence and independence, especially as I discovered my love for learning through immersion. I gained new perspectives—not just about the world, but about myself as well. Spiritually and emotionally, I felt enriched and inspired by the guidance and advice I received during this journey. I developed people skills, honed my communication abilities, and learned how to navigate the world as a Black woman in her most divine, feminine, and strong essence. These skills have not only prepared me to be a more confident and capable traveler but also someone ready to approach life and future opportunities with grace and resilience. This experience has shown me that this is just the beginning, and I’m excited to keep growing and exploring.”
