Student Spotlight: Kyla Clemons in England

What is one challenge you experienced during your first month? How did you overcome that challenge?

“During my first month in England, I struggled a lot with food. It's difficult to find 3 meals a day in a new place where the food is so different. Grocery shopping is also difficult because the products and things I'm used to buying aren't always available. I overcame this challenge by exploring. I went out to new cafes and restaurants as much as I could and discovered what I like out here. I tried cooking new recipes at home and that has been a great experience as well.”

What similarities and differences have you experienced between your host culture and your culture?

“England and the US are quite similar. They share many similarities when it comes to racial demographics, infrastructure, accessibility, and cultural diversity. The main difference I've noticed is social etiquette. British people are a lot more reserved and incredibly polite. In the US people are pretty open and talkative.”

What are you looking forward to experiencing in your second month abroad?

“I'm looking forward to traveling! Being in the UK means I can travel to the rest of Europe easily and I am most definitely going to take advantage of that. I'm also looking forward to progressing in my courses and learning new skills.”
