Student Spotlight: Charlise Norris in Japan

What is something you want to remember about your time abroad?

”I believe that it will be easy to remember the larger excursions I’ll take while I’m here. For example, I’ll never forget my trip around Mt. Fuji or the nightlife in Shibuya. However, what I’m growing to love the most are the more mundane, everyday things. My train rides to school every day, wandering around in a new neighborhood of Tokyo once a week, and getting snacks from the convenience stores are a few of the things I’m sure I’ll subconsciously miss. I hope I don’t forget to cherish these small moments.”

Describe the favorite part of your day in your host city.

“My favorite part of my day in Tokyo is when I have a friendly encounter with someone new. Sometimes it’s talking to the elderly people in the elevator of my building, and sometimes it’s making plans with a new friend in one of my classes. Tokyo is a very fast-paced city, so I really appreciate these slower moments when I can just chat with someone new. I also appreciate that it’s a natural and low-stakes way to practice speaking Japanese!”

What does the black experience feel like in your host city? Is it similar or different from your home city?

“My home city of Atlanta is known for being a hub of black culture. It’s the home of MLK’s former residence and church, many hip-hop artists, and multiple HBCUs. Tokyo could not be more different. Despite being a very diverse city, there are few African Americans. So the feel of the city is extremely different— the soul that Atlanta has is missing. Despite this, I’m grateful for the kindness of the people here. I’m not treated differently, aside from a few curious glances here and there. I don’t mind them either, especially when they lead to conversations in which I can share where I am from.”
