Student Spotlight: Charlise Norris in Japan

What skills have you learned while living abroad?

”I’ve managed to get around in unfamiliar places, whether that’s taking the train, a taxi, ora bus. Traveling around and being reliant on public transportation means facing some challenges, and I’ve gotten much better at brushing them off. I’ve also gotten more creative with my cooking! There are some ingredients and spices that I don’t have access to here, so I’ve had to learn how to make different cuisines and substitute certain things.”

How has your host culture influenced you?

“Culture varies a lot across Japan depending on what prefecture or city you’re in, so it’s hard to say. However, the Japanese people really emphasize respect for others, which I appreciate.”

What accomplishments have you celebrated while studying abroad?

“I’ve traveled to many places since I’ve been here, which is very significant for me because I haven’t traveled like this before! I went on my very first solo trip, which is something I had dreamed of doing since I was a child. I did all the planning, booking, and execution. During the trip, I just remember feeling so grateful that I was getting to fulfill my dreams and have such meaningful experiences..”
